The U.S. is one of the leaders in the global trade of alcohols and their derivatives. In 2014, the U.S. exported 1,553 thousand tonnes of alcohols and their derivatives totaling 2,176 million USD, 15% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Mexico, where it supplied 18% of its total exports of alcohols in value terms, accounting for 61% of Mexico’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, the U.S. was a net importer of alcohols and their derivatives. In this period, imports consistently exceeded exports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced due to high export prices.
The Netherlands and Germany were the main global suppliers of alcohols in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Singapore (+10% per year) and China (+9% per year), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-2 per year).
In 2014, the United States’ top 5 trading partners were Mexico, China, Canada, Belgium and Brazil, with a combined share of 52% of the U.S exports. The share of Mexico increased significantly (+4 percentage points), while the share of China illustrated negative dynamics (-8 percentage points).
