Abstract
Global hop production amounted to 118 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -11.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global hop output pursued a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -0.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global hop production attained its maximum volume of 142 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total hop output growth failed to regain its strength.
Over the analyzed period, global hop production was buoyed by growth of beer consumption and growth of Asian population. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to hop output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.
The world hop harvested area amounted to 86 thousand ha in 2015, which was 3.8% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.7% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total harvested area of hop peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for hop globally.
The global average yield of hop amounted to 16 thousand hg/ha in 2015, rising by 3.1% from the previous year figure. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +0.8% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest hop yields were recorded in 2011, when it peaked at 17 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these figures throughout the analyzed period.
