Germany seized control of the chocolate and cocoa products market. In 2014, Germany exported 839 thousand tonnes of chocolate and cocoa products totaling 4.9 billion USD, 12% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was France, where it supplied 12.0% of its total chocolate and cocoa products exports in value terms, accounting for 28.8% of France’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of chocolate and cocoa products. Over the period under review, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
Belgium and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of chocolate and cocoa products in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Poland (+15.0% per year) and the U.S. (+11.3% per year). Even with this stiffer competition, Germany was able to strengthen its leading position in the global export structure.
In 2014, Germany’s top 5 trading partners were France, the United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands and Poland, with a combined 42.6% share of Germany’s chocolate and cocoa products exports. The share of the United Kingdom increased slightly (+1.1 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-4.7 percentage points).
