The global trade in bentonite amounted to 671 million USD in 2015, experiencing mild fluctuations over the period under review. A 21% drop in 2009 was followed by recovery over the next two years, until exports slightly decreased again. Overall, there was an annual increase of +2.9% from 2007 to 2015.
According to IndexBox estimates, USA continued to dominate with a strong lead in global supplies of bentonite. In 2015, bentonite exports from the USA totaled 199 million USD, which accounted for 30% of global exports. India, Turkey, China, and India were the other key global suppliers of bentonite in 2015, with a 28% combined share of global exports.
India (+13.9% per year) and Turkey (+14.1% per year) were the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2015. India significantly strengthened its position in terms of global bentonite exports, growing its share from 5% in 2007 to 10% in 2015.
On the other hand, Germany (10.9%, based on value terms), Canada (5.9%), Japan (5.3%), Indonesia (4.9%), and Saudi Arabia (4.7%) were the leading destinations of bentonite imports in 2015. Imports to Indonesia grew at a rapid pace of +18.9% per year from 2007 to 2015. None of the leading importers decreased their imports of bentonite over the period under review. Indonesia’s share of global imports grew by +3 percentage points, while the balance of the importers maintained their share size from 2007 to 2015.
