Belgium continued its dominance in the global asbestos-cement trade. In 2014, Belgium exported 171.7 thousand tonnes of cement totaling 141 million USD, 12% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was France, where it supplied 28.8% of its total cement exports in value terms, accounting for 49.4% of France’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Belgium was a net exporter of asbestos-cement and cellulose fiber-cement articles. In this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced due to high export prices.
The U.S. and Thailand were among the other main global suppliers of cement in 2014. Thailand was also one of the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 (+22.4% per year), eclipsed only by India over this period (+29.2% per year). With this surge in exports, Thailand was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, Belgium’s top 5 trading partners were France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark, with a combined 75.4% share of Belgian exports. The share of Denmark increased (+3.6 percentage points), while the share of Ireland illustrated negative dynamics (-4.4 percentage points).
