In the fall of 2017, Garden Grove High School was selected as one of only 1,000 schools worldwide to participate in the College Board’s AP Capstone program. This program is unique to other AP courses, equipping students with skills that are highly sought after by top colleges. Skills like research, collaboration, and communication not only help students in the college admittance process, but also lead to success in 21st century careers.
These courses are designed to enhance the study skills students use in content specific AP courses and encourage students to develop their argumentative writing and speaking capabilities. In the AP Capstone program, students gain valuable experience in evaluating writing and research for its credibility, bias, and authenticity. The program also challenges students intellectually and offers students the freedom to choose what topics they will be researching for projects.
The AP Capstone program consists of two courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. In AP Seminar, students look at real-world issues from multiple perspectives and learn to take that information and create their own research-based reasoning. With that, they will produce essays and oral or visual presentations as part of a team or independently. AP Research sets students on a year-long research path, exploring an academic topic of personal interest in which students address the concern their topic proposes. At the end of the process of gathering and analyzing research and data, students pull all their sources together to create a 4,000-5,000 word paper, accompanied with an oral presentation defending their position.
Garden Grove High School students who score a 3 or higher on the AP Seminar, AP Research, and four additional AP assessments of their choosing will earn the AP Capstone Diploma. This diploma demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and a student’s ability to be successful at the college level. Receiving the AP Capstone Diploma offers students a unique chance to set themselves apart and distinguish themselves during the college admittance process. The interdisciplinary format of study that the AP Capstone program provides students with is at the center of college readiness and lifelong learning and success.
Garden Grove Unified School District is pleased to announce that Bolsa Grande High School has also been selected for the elite AP Capstone program for the 2018-2019 school year. Students within GGUSD continue to excel academically and receive new opportunities to prepare them for lifelong success.
