Garden Grove Unified School District Opens New Computer Immersion Academy

Heritage Elementary will come back into session for the 2018-2019 school year with many exciting new changes!

When the new school year begins in August, one school in the Garden Grove Unified School District will open with new opportunities and resources for students. Heritage Elementary School has always been committed to student success, but when the 2018-2019 year begins, students will attend a school transformed by technology at the newly-named Heritage Computer Science Immersion Academy.

The school will open with more than just a new name. Garden Grove Unified School District has teamed up with Code to the Future, the nation’s leader in establishing computer science-based schools, to transform Heritage Elementary into the new Computer Science Immersion Academy. The decision was approved by school board members in February, and the transformation process begun. As part of everyday curriculum for the 2018-2019 school year, students can expect to see programming, robotics, coding and other skills as a regular part of their instruction.

Even though Heritage Elementary School has already embedded technology into their school day, the new partnership with Code to the Future will provide the school with new technological tools.  These tools will provide teachers with a way to help students explore the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and prepare students for 21st century jobs in technology. Teachers will also have access to training and resources to support them as they create technology-centered lessons. The new educational focus will have students involved in project-based learning assignments that will encourage the development of  communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

An exciting aspect of Garden Grove Unified’s new partnership is that Code to the Future aims to actually make school more fun for students! Code to the Future integrates several computer science aspects into daily learning, including game design, turning students from players into creators. Code to the Future’s computer science immersion program heightens student engagement and integrates interactive learning into every part of a child’s education, all while preparing them for the growing demand in STEM jobs.
