Former Graduate Dean Tackles Highschool Dropout Crisis

Social Circle, Ga. – On, Saturday, May 19, 2018, the Tiers Free Academy celebrated their third annual graduation at the Social Circle Theater at 650 Ashley Drive in Social Circle, GA.

Dr. Annise “Doc” Mabry has been a homeschool mom since 2010; and, is a former Dean of Graduate Studies. She is recognized in the homeschool community as an expert in GA homeschool laws—especially homeschool high school diplomas.

“My vision was driven because I wanted to create something that gave students a true alternative path to a traditional high school diploma. I wanted to empower parents in realizing how much power they truly have when it comes to homeschooling. By the time most families meet me, the students are academically broken. They do not see their abilities only their obstacles. I wanted to take every obstacle that in the past had been stacked against them and transform those obstacles into a tangible opportunity. Even the GED which was first designed to offer an opportunity to obtain a high school diploma has become an obstacle for many who have dropped out of school. Currently, the GED test only has a 20% first attempt pass rate; and, 80% of the GED test takers who fail one or more parts of the test never return to retest,” said Dr. Annise Mabry.

“Walking across that stage to obtain a high school diploma is more than simply a rite of passage—it is a sense of accomplishment. When students don’t have an opportunity to feel that sense of accomplishment, it creates a ripple effect throughout their life” said Dr. Mabry.

Just ask Tier’s Free Academy 2018 honorary diploma recipient, Mrs. Elaine “MeMaw” Goss Harrison who had to leave high school at the age of 15 to help take care of her family “Receiving my diploma was my life’s dream and I am grateful for the opportunity.” said Harrison.
