February has been a busy month for law enforcement officers and DUI Attorneys in Phoenix and the surrounding area. It started with the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which ran right through Super Bowl Sunday. Most recently, many Arizonans celebrated a long weekend for President’s Day, or maybe had a bit too much to drink on Valentine’s Day.
The high-profile sporting events, followed by a long weekend, means there were a lot more officers out on the roadways looking to crack down on suspected drunk drivers.
Attorney Brian D. Sloan with The Arizona DUI Team says it is not uncommon for people to either be wrongfully arrested for DUI during such crackdowns, or charged with a more serious offense than is warranted.
“Officers often take a zero-tolerance approach over holiday weekends, which means they will sometimes charge drivers, even if that person is under the legal limit,” Sloan says. “We get a lot of calls from people who feel they were acting responsibly, yet still ended up being arrested.”
Sloan encourages anyone who may have been arrested for DUI over the President’s Day weekend, or any time during the month, to contact an Attorney as soon as possible. Because Arizona is one of the harshest states in the nation when it comes to DUI, even first-time offenses can have very serious consequences.
For instance, someone charged with a 1st Time Regular DUI could face anywhere from one day in jail, up to 6 months in jail, approximately $1,500 in fines and fees a 90 day license suspension, and be forced to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle they operate. Those charged with multiple offenses, or someone with a higher blood-alcohol level, face even harsher penalties if convicted.
“It is incredibly important for anyone charged with a DUI to contact an experienced DUI Lawyer as soon as possible,” Sloan says. “There could be factors involved with your case that could help you reach a favorable outcome, including reduced or dismissed charges.”
