After a long recovery period, total EU alumina exports finally overcame their pre-crisis level and reached a peak of 1,538 million EUR in 2015.
Ireland, Germany, France, and Spain were the main suppliers of alumina among the EU members, with a combined share of 78% of total exports in 2015. Spain (+4.9% per year) and Ireland (+1.9% per year) were the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2015. Moreover, all leading countries strengthened their positions in the European exports from 2007 to 2015.
Most of the alumina deliveries took place between the EU countries, but the extra-EU exports took up a substantial 37% share of total EU exports. In 2015, the value of extra-EU exports of alumina amounted to 567 million EUR, which was 5% less than the year before.
Extra-EU exports comprise approximately 30% of the total EU alumina output, which leads to the high sensitivity of EU alumina industry to the environment in the foreign markets. This share grew steadily over 2007-2014, but decreased significantly in 2015. The decline in extra-EU exports and their share in the total output is mainly attributable to the reduction in exports to Russia, which in previous years has been a key partner of the EU in the extra-EU exports of alumina. This reduction in supply is due to a stagnation in demand for alumina on the part of Russia’s aluminum industry, as well as the diversification of sources of supply, taking into account the political situation and the deterioration of trade relations between Russia and the EU.
