Dr. Chang has been bringing smiles to the local residents in Omaha for more than 15 years, and she is very concerned about the phenomenon of many Americans not paying enough attention to oral health treatments. “Most people have the misconception that if there is no major pain in their mouth, they do not need to get a regular checkup. Yet, nothing can be further from the truth,” said Dr. Chang.

Recent studies have been published by both the American Heart Association and the American Dental Association reporting that delayed dental care can easily lead to gum diseases, which then could cause weakened immunity problems, leading to heart, lung and liver diseases. Even pregnant mothers could have still-born or pre-mature babies due to gum diseases.

She is also disturbed about the happenings in the local communities. “The number of individuals who cannot afford 3 square meals per day is a problem that is growing. Food demands at the local food banks have been on the rise and yet donations for food have decreased.”

Dr. Chang encourages local residents to drop a donation of just $3 for the local food bank at her office. Those who participate will receive a free dental exam, consultation and X-rays as a reward from her. 100% of all donations will be directly sent to the Food Bank of the Heartland.

Dr. Chang’s involvement in giving back to her community is well known. She gives voluntary services to assist the underprivileged in the community. She has volunteered for YMCA on many occasions in the past for overnighters, supervision of kids, outings with teens and school-age children. Dr. Chang understands that the needs in her community are not just related to dental health.

“This provides an opportunity for our practice and the community members to work as a team in enhancing their dental health and also touching the lives of the less fortunate in our community,” said Dr. Chang. “I appeal to everyone to tell their friends and neighbors about our program. When more people are informed about this effort, more needy families will access help and more will remain healthy!”
