CVESD welcomes Grammy award-winning band Switchfoot

In an effort to expand its music programs, the Chula Vista Elementary School District is collaborating with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory to help students explore their artistic talents.

The numerous projects and events that have resulted from the partnership have captured the attention of numerous high-profile names, including the Grammy award-winning band Switchfoot. The popular alternative rock band made appearances at multiple schools last year to share their passion for music. Students, parents, and CVESD staff members filled auditoriums for special performances, and one-on-one meet-and-greet sessions for autographs and photos.

During Switchfoot’s annual charity event in Encinitas, California, a number of lucky CVESD students shared the stage with the award-winning band and showed off their music skills. A portion of the proceeds helped purchase new musical instruments for students, adding to the grants donated by VH1’s Save The Music Foundation.

The district has also received special recognition from the prestigious Yale School of Music and the California School Boards Association (CSBA), which awarded the district with a Golden Bell Award for excellence in Visual and Performing Arts.

Over the past 3 years, the district has invested $15 million in music instruction and has partnered with local and national organizations to give students a greater chance to explore their artistic talents. Investments in visual and performing arts has also led to other positive outcomes: increased school attendance, higher parent engagement, greater academic motivation, and higher state test scores.
