Chula Vista Elementary School District students have outperformed state testing averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics for the third year in a row.
In September, the California Department of Education released the testing results for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), which challenges students to develop their critical thinking skills, solve complex problems and strengthen their writing skills.
Approximately 63 percent of CVESD students in grades 3-6 met or exceeded standards in ELA, while about 51 percent of students met or exceeded math standards in grades 3-6. Compared to the average test scores of students in San Diego County and California, CVESD students outscored south San Diego County districts and the overall state average. In fact, 18 CVESD schools matched or exceeded the average ELA scores of Coronado schools.
At Thurgood Marshall Elementary and Veterans Elementary, almost 80 percent of students met or exceeded standards in ELA, making them the top performing district schools. Meanwhile, John J. Montgomery Elementary showed the highest year-over-year increase in English with a growth of 15 percent in students who met or exceeded standards.
Veterans Elementary also came out on top in mathematics, with 75.7 percent of students meeting or exceeded standards. Wolf Canyon Elementary had the second highest average scores in math, with 69.4 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards. Silver Wing Elementary had the biggest year-over-year increase in math, with a growth of 12.6 percent in students who met or exceeded standards.
