Austin, TX – March 14th 2016 – For five weeks between February 25th and March 28th, athletes around the world will test their strength and fitness against one another in an effort to appear on the leaderboard for the CrossFit Games. The five-week five-workout competition takes place online, enabling competitors to participate from a registered CrossFit affiliate gym, or via video link. With competitors training all year round, the annual community event is the ultimate test of both physical strength and fitness. Jeff Evans and Aaron Hanna, both from the Southeast, can be seen destroying the 16.2 workout on Pocket WOD, the number one app for functional fitness athletes.

Workouts for the Open are released online each Thursday during the specified period. Athletes are given four days to perform the week’s workout and submit their scores; this must be done by 5 pm PST on the following Monday. The score is then ranked according to age group, geographical region, country and state.

The Annual CrossFit Games

For the top athletes in their geographical region, the CrossFit Games Open is the first qualifying step to get to the CrossFit Games at Carson, the world’s premier test to find the fittest man on earth. Anyone over 14 can take part in the Open, with the top athletes qualifying for regionals, which take place from May 13th to the 29th, 2016. The top ranking men and women then go on to compete at the Reebok CrossFit Games at the StubHub Center in Carson California from July 19th through the 24th in a bid to be ranked the Fittest on Earth.

The 16.2 Workout

The 16.2 workout contains toes-to-bars, double-unders, squat cleans, and an initial four-minute time cap. A four-minute extension is added every time a successive round is completed before the time expires. Each additional round contains heavier squat cleans but fewer reps, beginning in the first round with 15 squat cleans lifting 135/85lb. Aaron Hanna and Jeff Evans both have completed five full rounds and 430 reps, Hanna achieving 19.38 and Evans 18.31. Both aged 27, Hanna is currently third in the Southeast Leaderboard, and Evans is placed fourth.

For many people, the CrossFit Open is about joining the global CrossFit community to pit themselves against their peers across the world, or within the same country, state, city or gym. It is a chance to celebrate strength and fitness, share the same grueling workout with one another, and recognize the commitment each athlete has made to find out what they are truly made of.
