Rio Tinto Stadium, the home of Real Salt Lake from Major League Soccer will host an international friendly match between Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, September 4th.
The Rio Tinto Stadium is sometimes referred to as “The RioT” and this venue can seat slightly over 20,000 fans for soccer matches. This venue in Sandy, UT has hosted a plethora of events over the years including the 2009 MLS All-Star Game and 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Final in 2013. It also served as a host stadium in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. The stadium opened up in October, 2008 with a match featuring Real Salt Lake vs. the New York Red Bulls. The naming rights of this stadium for 15 years were sold to Rio Tinto, an international mining company.
Both Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago participated in the recent CONCACAF Gold Cup which was played in the United States. These teams always drew a huge crowd at every venue where they competed. Residents of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area can’t wait to see these teams meet on the pitch over Labor Day weekend.
