The first Copa America tournament in history to played outside of South America will be held in the United States from June 3rd to June 26th. The tournament has a rich history that dates back to 1916 and is held as part of an agreement between CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. This year there will be 16 teams that will compete for the right to become champion and earn the automatic berth into to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Some of the world’s best teams will travel to North America for the tournament including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. With an increased number of teams in the tournament this year, there will now be four groups featuring four teams competing throughout the country. In Group A, the host nation United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Paraguay. Group B will feature Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti, and Peru. Group C will feature Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Jamaica. Group D will include Argentina, Chile, Panama, and Bolivia. On paper, the group that appears to be the most difficult is Group A where three teams have a legitimate chance to winning it all.

Some of the highest ranked nations in the world according to FIFA will travel to some of the most popular venues in the United States for their matches including the Rose Bowl, Levi’s Stadium, Citrus Bowl, Soldier Field, CenturyLink Field, and MetLife Stadium. Among the highest ranked nations in the world according to the latest rankings released by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association includes No. 2 Argentina, No. 5 Chile, No. 6 Brazil, No. 8 Colombia, No. 11 Uruguay, No. 13 Ecuador, and No. 22 Mexico (as of March 7, 2016).

In the history of this tournament, Uruguay has won the most titles with 15 and has also reached the title match an additional six times. Argentina is only a title behind Uruguay for the most all time, while Brazil has the third most championships with eight. Chile won the 2015 event and will look to advance past Group D in June.

The Copa America Centenario tournament is one that will bring tens of thousands of fans to their local venues for exciting soccer action. Fans in the United States don’t often have the chance to see some of the best players in the world competing in North America so they will not want to miss a single free kick, goal, or remarkable save.
