Every four years, CONMEBOL hosts the Copa America. This is the oldest football confederation in the world and the oldest tournament too. Started in 1916, it turns 100 years old this summer, and to mark that special day, the organization has worked to create a once-in-a-lifetime tournament. In partnership with CONCACAF, they have created the Copa America Centenario that features all of the football confederations of the Americas in a series of truly unique matches.
Starting on June 3rd and running though June 26th, the Copa America Centenario will allow 16 different teams to compete in ten different venues throughout the United States. Traditionally hosted in South America, this marks the first time in history that the Copa is played on American soil.
Match 4 of this special tournament will be played on June 4, and feature Brazil vs. Ecuador at the famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. These two teams are part of “Group B”, which also includes Haiti and Peru. The Group Stage will be played in a round robin format, with four groups eventually advancing to the Quarterfinals.
The winner of Match 4 is given three points, and if the outcome is a draw each team receives a single point. At the conclusion of the Group Stage, the first and second place teams advance to the Quarterfinals that start in Seattle, WA on June 16.
The Brazilian national football team is one of the most successful in the history of FIFA and CONMEBOL. They have a long list of championships under their belts and are led by captain “Neymar” or Neymar de Silva Santos Junior. The Ecuadorian national football team has made it into three FIFA World Cups, but has not won a Copa America to date. They are led by captain Walter Ayovi.
The Rose Bowl in Pasadena is a historic structure, recently renovated in 2011. As one of the most famous stadiums in America, it can hold more than 90,000 spectators. It is also a space commonly used for association football events, even hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup Final.
