The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was first held in 1931 and is currently held at NRG Stadium (Reliant Stadium) in Houston, Texas. Prior to taking the show to home of the National Football League’s Houston Texans, the fair was held at the Houston Astrodome. The fair is also known as RodeoHouston or HLSR and is the largest live entertainment and livestock show in the world. It is one of the things the city of Houston is known for and can be compared to events like Mardi Gras for New Orleans and the Times Square Ball in New York City.
In past years some of the headliners at the annual Houston Rodeo included: Garth Brooks, Selena, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Lady Antebellum, ZZ Top, Jonas Brothers, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Bieber, Janet Jackson, KISS, Train, Blake Shelton, Styx, Pitbull and George Strait. Tickets for concerts at the Houston Rodeo are generally priced very reasonably.
In 2015, this event pulled in nearly 2.5 million guests there has been up to 30,000 volunteers annually. The Houston Rodeo is 20 days long and it gets underway with the Downtown Rodeo Roundup held near Houston City Hall, the Downtown Rodeo parade, and the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run – a 10k and 5k walk & run and the World’s Championship BBQ Contest. The HLRS show features actual rodeo action, livestock competitions, concerts, a carnival, pig racing, International Wine Competition, shopping and livestock auctions. Traditional trail rides, which start in different areas of Texas and end in Houston, precede the Rodeo events. The City of Houston celebrates this event with Go Texan Day, where residents are encouraged to dress in western wear the Friday before the rodeo begins.
