Local activist group, Charlotte Humans for Positive Progress, is pleased to announce that the organization has teamed up with GoodRoad CiderWorks to hold a “Blessings Bag” rally and supply drive that will directly help the homeless population in Charlotte. The event is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 1pm to 4pm. The public is welcome to attend, offer in-kind or cash donations, and also relax and enjoy a cider at GoodRoad CiderWorks, located at 117 Southside Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina 28217.
Event organizer and Charlotte Humans co-founder, Amanda Clark, explains the concept behind Blessings Bags. “I was first turned on to the concept of Blessings Bags a little over a year ago. I was on the lookout to do something meaningful when I encountered a homeless person on the streets of Charlotte—something that goes beyond simply offering money. When I came across the idea of Blessings Bags, my husband and I decided to make some.”
Blessings Bags are typically gallon-sized zip-loc bags that are filled with everyday items and personal hygiene necessities. Clark initially included shampoo, soap, sunscreen, wet wipes, deodorant, granola bars, combs, and Subway gift cards in the bags that she and her husband created.
“We keep them in our car, and if we see someone in need, offer them one,” Clark explains. “I realize it is a temporary fix to a big problem, but I also believe that it shows someone in need that they are cared for, and that people want to help them. When I introduced this concept to the Charlotte Humans group, it was met with great enthusiasm.”
Charlotte Humans for Positive Progress hopes to rally community members to assist and participate in this cause. The purpose of the supply drive at GoodRoad CiderWorks is to appeal to the community-at-large to donate items for use in the Blessings Bags that Charlotte Humans will put together. It is the group’s goal to make and distribute 200 bags to members of the Charlotte homeless population.
