New York – June 25, 2018 – Traditional products of Calabrian cuisine are, once again, the protagonist of Eataly’s U.S. locations. The partnership’s inauguration was held in January and its second part continues with a series of events to spread the word of Calabrian food and wine abroad.

Eataly Downtown will host its first big event on Friday, June 29 (from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm) with a showcase of food products, cooking shows, tastings, meetings with the representatives of the Region of Calabria, and Chef Luca Caligiuri. The event will be led by Ornella Fado, writer and presenter of the award-winning TV show “Brindiamo!”. The event’s filming will be presented on the web and in a special edition of “Brindiamo!,” which is broadcast on NYC TV Life and will soon be available on AMAZON Prime video internationally. Throughout the evening, there will also be a performance by Cesare Vangeli, director, choreographer, dancer, and executive of Lim, the prestigious Musical studio in Rome.

The event will feature cooking presentations by Chef Luca Caligiuri, who represents the Regional Chefs Association. The Association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of the Region of Calabria, Gerardo Mario Oliverio, who has asked the chefs, ambassadors of Calabria in the world, to promote the products and recipes of the Mediterranean Diet.

The evening sets off a series of events which will take place from Saturday, June 30 to Monday, July 2, starting at 6:00 pm. Different zones of Eataly Downtown will host three events under the brand “Foodiversità Takeover”. These events will be dedicated to individual food producers and the history of their products and their territory. Chef Luca Caligiuri, with his expert hands, will cook the specialties of the Calabrian territory and offer them for tasting.

Calabria is where the Mediterranean Diet was first discovered: it was in this region, precisely in Nicòtera, that in 1957 Professor Ancel Keys, leader of a new style of nutrition and psychophysical wellbeing, identified the pillars of the diet that are called “Mediterranean” today and declared by UNESCO to be protected Intangible Cultural Heritage.

With regard to a healthy Mediterranean diet, Calabria has a lot to offer – with ancient varieties of fruit, vegetables and typical products that have kept their authenticity throughout the years. It is for this reason that Italian scientist Valter Longo, a Calabrian native, author of the revolutionary “La dieta della longevità” (the diet of longevity), researcher at the University of Southern California and the FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology (Ifom) of Milan, consistently underlines the value of the simple and healthy diet of his Calabrian childhood.

In 2018, on the shelves of Eataly stores across the United States, it will be possible to find new types of artisanal pasta – including Filei Pasta, a historic home-made pasta from Calabria which is the perfect sauce-collecting shape. You will also find the flavorful Red Onion of Tropea PGI, and one of the most famous Southern cheeses – Caciocavallo Silano PDO. Of course, a meal would not be complete without the great wines of the Calabrian territory – such as the Cirò AOC in its red, white and rosé variations, the Lamezia AOC, and the Savuto AOC. Confectionary products such as the Calabria AOC liquorice, the Torrone of Bagnara PGI, and fig compotes made with Cosenza AOC figs, will also be available.

There will also be typical spicy salsas made of Calabrian chilli pepper varities, and extra virgin olive oil, the staples on dining room tables across Calabria.

From June 30 to July 2, the region’s products will also be featured at the “Fancy Food Show 2018”, the biggest event in North America dedicated to the food and wine industry.

These great events promoting the territory are all under the brand “Rosso Calabria”, which has been actively promoted by President of the Region of Calabria, Mario Oliverio. The goal is not only to enhance the specialties of the beautiful territory of the ancient land between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea, but also to present its culture, character, and charm to the world. The “Rosso Calabria” (Red Calabria) brand represents the red of the Codex Purpureus Rossanesis, one of the illimunated testament manuscripts, and the red of the people’s daily passion to enhance agriculture, tourism and regional artisanship.
