The Report “Bottled Fuel Additives Market: By Type (Detergents, Cetane Improvers, Corrosion Inhibitors, Others); By Application (Diesel, Gasoline, Biofuel, Industrial Fuel, Marine Fuel and Aviation Fuel) and By Geography – Forecast (2015-2020)”, published by IndustryARC, estimates the market to reach $484.6 Million by 2020.
Fuel Additives are one of the most prolific innovations of lubricant industry. Whether it alters a fuels burn rate, increase surface area, prevent corrosive effects or simply color, innovators have developed a range of additives over the years which give these lubricant fuels an added property that serves a soaring demand from consumers.

Fuel Additives are largely associated with additives of gasoline and diesel. With the interest of environmental protection and curbing emissions, the innovation around additives has a broader impact of to change, alter or enhance specific attributes of a fuel. Over the years, various compounds and blends have been devised to emulate better fuels for industries, commercial use and end consumers. The widespread use of fuel additives has resulted in significant global contamination, as well as occupational and environmental exposures. Tetra-ethyl lead (TEL) and the oxygenate MTBE, both used as anti-knocking agents are known for the contamination they does to the environment. With growing concern for environmental pollution, regulatory organizations have made it necessary to produce fuel additives with low emission rates.
Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol) is generally used in manufacturing of alcohol, but now it is being seen as a new form of fuel with less emission levels. The recent surge in interest for alternative fuel sources is driving research to use ethanol mixed with gasoline as transportation fuel source. As per the U.S. Department of Energy, almost all gasoline in the U.S. now contains some ethanol. In order to reduce air pollution, anhydrous ethanol, which is a pure form of ethanol without water, can be mixed with gasoline to form a more efficient fuel. Additives find their application also in these blends which make them all the more viable for the environment.
Ethanol Fuel is increasingly used to mix with gasoline fuel, as a replacement for methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE), which is responsible for contamination of water and soil. In the U.S. the EPA has been recommending to use ethanol as a replacement for gasoline to enhance its performance. In Canada the Federal Ethanol Expansion Program (EEP) was launched to increase the use of ethanol in fuels from approximately 7% to a planned 35%. There is still a great deal of debate about the pros and cons of ethanol as fuel, but the world is competent enough to assess the risks and get along with them for a better future with low emissions. Hence, the demand for fuel additives seem to grow in parallel with the growing adoption of ethanol-gasoline blends in the U.S. and also in other regions.
