Chicano-Con was conceived originally as a complementary event for the world famous San Diego Comic-Con. At Chicano-Con, the goal is to bring some of the Comic-Con experience to the kids from the Barrio who cannot attend, and act as a focal point for Latino popular artists, musicians and directors and actors. The company will be hosting workshops for children where they will give away free comic books, teach kids how to create their own super hero and even break a few pinatas! Adults can expect cos-play competition, panel discussions with Lalo Alcaraz and other Latino artists. At these annual Chicano-Con events, Border X Brewing have made a habit of surprising attendees with one or more big names. Guillermo Del Toro was a surprise attendee 2 years ago, this year is anyone’s guess!
The event, takes place July 19th thru July 22nd at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan, a historically Chicano community in San Diego that’s just two miles east of where the madness of Comic-Con takes place.
“Comics and the popular arts are important to the Latino community and can play a role in children’s lives, just like they changed mine,” says event co-creator David Favela, who learned to speak English by reading comic books. “While Comic-Con is an incredible event, there really isn’t one place for all the Latino/Chicano artists to connect and inspire each other. We try to do that, and we try to support these artists in their journey into the popular arts.”
One of their many inspirations is for Latino comic fans to have a place to celebrate their geekiness and their culture. Even as Comic-Con does better to represent Latinos, Chicano-Con will continue to bring the Latino perspective.
