Scholarship Review and Award Process

Blue Kangaroo received a significant number of applications for the first Community Activist Scholarship award with some impressive candidates that made a significant impact helping others in their local communities. After detailed review and discussion by Blue Kangaroo staff, a winner was chosen that best exemplified the qualities and actions of the Community Activist Scholarship award.

Scholarship Winner Overview

The winner of the first Blue Kangaroo Community Activist Scholarship is Stephanie Sills, a High School Senior, and soon to be Freshman at Michigan State University who exemplified all of the qualities of the Blue Kangaroo Community Activist Scholarship award. Two years ago when Stephanie’s mom was diagnosed with lung cancer, her world was changed forever. To help cope with the personal situation yet determined to start helping others affected by lung cancer, Stephanie, along with the aid of two close friends, appealed to their local city council to get approval for a 5K run fundraiser for lung cancer research. What started as a simple concept with a real purpose soon became a full-fledged event called “The Lung Run” by recruiting volunteers, sponsors, and hundreds of race participants. In just two years “The Lung Run” event has raised over $44,000 for lung cancer programs.

“You don’t do community service for the recognition, but I’m honored to be recognized by Blue Kangaroo.  I want to thank all of the people who worked so hard on all of my community service projects but especially for those who volunteer to work at “The Lung Run.”  The funds from the Blue Kangaroo Community Activist scholarship will be instrumental in helping to pay for my college education at Michigan State.” Said Stephanie Sills, Blue Kangaroo Community Activist Scholarship Winner

New Community Activist Scholarship for 2017

Following the success of the first scholarship offering, Blue Kangaroo is excited to announce the next offering of the Community Activist Scholarship with a submission deadline of May 31^st, 2017. Based on the same criteria of helping students who help others in their community, students can review the application requirements on the Blue Kangaroo scholarship page.

Information for Schools

Colleges or Universities with an undergraduate program are encouraged to share Blue Kangaroo’s Community Activist Scholarship opportunity with their students by adding it to their school’s scholarship information pages. Interested schools can review the scholarship information via the Blue Kangaroo website, or send specific questions to the following email: scholarship@bluekangaroo.com

Blue Kangaroo plans to continue offering this scholarship in the future to reward students who continue to help others in their communities.
