As the project centers on awakening the hearts of this nation to the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.
Jon Butler, the founder of Big Cross Ministries a 501c(3) non profit, is set to build the tallest cross in the entire Western Hemisphere at 23 stories tall. The project is called the Gulf Coast Cross Project and not only will there be a giant cross but also a park that will feature a welcome center, a covered picnic area, an outdoor covered stage, walkways with monuments, koi ponds, and a splash pad fountain. Accordingly to Butler the $1,000,000 Gulf Coast Cross Project will touch and move one million people per year. He says; “God spoke to me and planted this dream inside of me to build this spiritual park and giant cross.” and continues “God told me land would be donated, that profession services and construction services would be donated and that millions would be touch and thousands would donate to build it.”
The land the was indeed donated is situated exactly between the heavily traveled Alabama Highway 59 and the Baldwin Beach Express which takes people to and from the beaches which are approximately 27 miles south of the proposed spiritual tourist destination. Butler states, “The 230’ cross will be seen by people when looking north from a beach condo tower especially at night because the cross will be light up at night.”
Jon also points out “just as God told me, the site plan drawings were donated, architectural drawings and mechanical engineered drawings for the Welcome Center were donated, the survey was donated, general contractor services donated, electrical contractor services and supplies donated and local advertising services – this is God’s project.”
Big Cross Ministries Inc. is a nonprofit corporation DBA the Gulf Coast Cross Project and it’s objective is to unite people and awaken to region and nation to the love of Christ and the power of the cross. This park will have free monthly events featuring speakers, preachers, praise and worship of God for all ages. Butler states “we want to break down denominational walls and bring Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, and all denominations together.”
From Jon Butler, “When God planted this dream in me and spoke it to me – it excited me and really scared me at the same time because all I had was faith and willingness; no experience, no money and no knowledge. It was beyond my understanding and simply too big for a common person to try to accomplish. I have learned and I continue to learn how powerful faith is, I have learned when I rely less on me and rely more on God this when miracles happen. I have learned God can use normal everyday humble people so God gets the glory. God likes to show up and show off and his vision is beyond our thinking. He doesn’t call the qualified – He instead qualifies the call.”
God is going to be doing some extraordinary things in the small city of Summerdale, AL As Jon Butler states This giant cross and spiritual park is important because it is God’s Project and millions will be touched and awaken.
