Bayside STEAM Academy Constructs Augmented Reality Sandbox

Interactive Tool for First-Hand Experience

For the first time in the South Bay Union School District, an Augmented Reality Sandbox has been introduced to Bayside STEAM Academy students, allowing them to engage with topography and the impact of the climate on terrain. This interactive tool was first discovered when teacher Michael Moran saw students at the University of California, Davis, using the AR Sandbox on a social media site.

With Bayside’s relentless commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, the instructional team is constantly searching for ways to integrate quality tools and inspirational channels for growth in students. The AR sandbox provides an unrivaled educational experience for students interested in the Earth’s geography.

With a 3D video camera and overhead projector, students project a topographical relief map onto a landscape area. They can then build mountains, lakes, elevations, clouds, and rivers on the computer to make adjustments to the scene. A new map is quickly generated and students can see the impact of their decisions on the land which would otherwise be overlooked. Click here to see a video of students using the AR sandbox.

South Bay’s proximity to the San Diego Bay further encouraged the installation of this hands-on learning technology. Students have the opportunity to see and better understand climate, erosion, and landforms as members of the larger community. This could not have been done without the support of community sponsors who care deeply for the quality of education at local schools.
