It offers a look back while catapulting the song’s iconic stature to a new generation.
The original track isfrom Michael Jackson’s 1979 classic album, Off The Wall and stands behind the inspirational diverse bass geniuses of Miller, Pastorius and others anchoring their groove theory. This version of “ I Can’t Help It” was produced by legendary Motown Producer Michael B, Sutton and Co-produced by Tresvant, Coleman and Jason Anderson. Bassist/composer Mitchell Coleman Jr. is a disciple of the Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, Louis Johnson and the Marcus Miller schools of The Throwdown. MitchellColeman Jr. has been thumpin’ basses since the tender age of 10. He was born the day after Christmas, 1967 in Meridian, Mississippi and spent his early years in Cuba, Alabama. When his father returned home from Vietnam, Mitchell and his family moved to Hartford then Bloomfield, Connecticut. It’s there that Mitchell fell in love with the electric bass and thing started to gel.When his parents divorced, Mitchell moved back to Alabama. Mitchell says, “The bass became my babysitter, that’s when Marcus Miller proved inspirational andI discovered how to blend Funk and Jazz.”
During a stint in the United States Air Force, the outfit forced Mitchell into a talent show where he won First Place performing his original song, “That’s Life.” He then took two semesters of music theory classes to further improve his craft and closely watched the sidemen of artists ranging from Be-Bop king Dizzy Gillespie to Quiet Storm queen Anita Baker.
Straight out of the service, Mitchell moved to Hollywood intending to study at B.I.T. (Bass Institute of Technology) but had to pay the bills with electrical engineering jobs. The universefound another way to provide Mitchell a final profound education upon his introduction to the music of master fretless electric bassist Jaco Pastorius. Soon after a chance meeting with Otis Williams, founding member of Motown’s The Temptations, Mitchell found himself in the mix of music’s unsung behind the scenes sidemen. Mitchell has been making music ever since and never looked back.
