Annual Everyone\’s a Reader Festival Stirs Excitement

South Bay Students Aim to Read at Grade Level by Third Grade

South Bay Union School District has established a goal that all students will be reading at grade level by the third grade. To support this goal, the South Bay PTA Council sponsored the “Everyone’s a Reader Festival” in May at Mendoza School. All students, families, and community members were invited to this event to share in the excitement of reading. Students who attended the event received snacks, a book bag, and a book to take home. Guest speakers read their favorite stories throughout the event, engaging students and families in various literary themes. The festival also included an opportunity drawing and a book fair with a buy one get one free deal.

Reading as entertainment and enrichment is a challenge for students, especially in the ever digital world. The plethora of entertaining activities available online and on electronical devices sometimes overshadows the value of sitting down to read a story for many students. South Bay, however, remains committed to the importance of reading through its encompassing curriculum, reading assessments, and district-wide events, such as this festival. With the support of families and teachers, South Bay students are reading for fun, and learning to love reading!
