Los Angeles, CA – May 14, 2018 –
“Rudolph is the most companionable existentialist who ever made movies.” – National Review, Armond White.
After returning to the big screen after his 15 year hiatus, filmmaker Alan Rudolph, best known for the 1984 “sexy, lonely hearts film Choose Me, the poetic Dorothy Parker biopic, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Equinox, Afterglow, Trixie, Investigating Sex, Love at Large, Mortal Thoughts, and other films that should have become landmarks of American sensibility,” wrote White, Rudolph has returned returning to the big screen after his 15 year hiatus’ with the Los Angeles–set love story, ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’.
‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ follows a divorced, former Navy boxing champ now struggling at an insurance company, Ray (Keith Carradine) and Helen (Sondra Locke), a bankrupt, California farmer looking for a bank loan, are both suddenly blessed with the good luck of endless free money, allowing the two to separately fantasize and enjoy their newly improved lives. “Their paths cross in the city of sprawling ambition with its assorted, displaced misfits. In our movie going romanticism, they’re brought together by destiny, but Rudolph’s method — his gently visionary style — attests that they’re united by the force of an artistic soul.”
With support from three-time Primetime Emmy Awards winner, Keith David (‘The Thing’, ‘Armageddon’, ‘The Princess and the Frog’), Samantha Mathis (‘American Psycho’, ‘Little Women’), and Academy Award nominee, Jennifer Tilly (‘Bound’, ‘Liar Liar’, ‘Seed of Chucky’), ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ portrays Rudolph’s ability to “play with mirror reflections creates Tennessee Williams–like visual images of the past and the deceased, adding richness to his depiction of lonely, private desire and fear of death.”
White continued, “Rudolph contrives L.A. images, bizarre interactions, and intimate dialogue in layers, parallels, and rhymes — proof of natural-born film skill and rare artistry — so that, while watching, a vision of life comes together in your head [and…] employs rear-projection shots of Old Hollywood, Paris, Japan, ocean liners, and fireworks, and this whimsy/reality juxtaposition is exquisite,” allowing ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ to go “goes beneath the surface of its characters’ differences to show what they have in common — what makes them soul mates.”
