A fun way to End Domestic Violence: OUTrage™ – A Game to Recognize and Change Abusive Behavior

September 5th, 2017 – October marks the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this is the time people reflect, get sensitized and act on domestic violence. Stephanie Angelo, SPHR, SHRM-SCP and  Carl Mangold, LCSW, LISAC (Ret.) are using a proactive approach where they want to help people recognize and change abusive behavior before it happens. With a game called OUTrage, the duo feel that teaching such a grave matter does not have to be a boring session, it can be fun while appreciating the seriousness of the vice. In developing the game, Stephanie and Carl are innovatively addressing and ending the pervasive social issues in a way that will attract many participants.

The game participants will experience how the abusers and victims of abuse behave, helping them to understand and devise ways through which they can stop the vice even before it happens. The developers of the game aim at bringing domestic violence down even to a point where it is eliminated. They appreciate that relying solely on the information from the victims; little can be obtained given the nature of their psychological and emotional abuse. The game tries to address this problem, through providing an avenue where people can get a clear understanding.

Studies have shown the most people do not understand how subtle emotional –psychological abuse can be. The developers of the game, through understanding that abuse starts with emotional abuse before it escalates to physical form, believe that a prior knowledge on how it manifests itself can help a great deal in eliminating the problem in the society. Friends and families , with the help of the game can help in addressing it way before it escalates, but for them do achieve  this , Stephanie and Carl believe they require an understanding of how the domestic violence manifests itself, and the game can help greatly towards this end.

The game is designed to have five participants or team playing; it can be used in offender treatment groups, domestic abuse shelters, high schools, colleges, social worker schools, and individual or family counseling settings.
